My story of giving is a little different than Kim’s. Last November I ran across an article in a magazine that I rarely buy, I’m so glad I did on that day. It was about a woman in San Francisco that started a charitable organization that tries to give a little comfort to homeless children. Project Night Night donates a bag filled with a blanket, a stuffed toy, and a book to shelters to be distributed to their young residents.
Now, the connection for me goes back to one of my grandmothers. For as long as I can remember my grandmother would sew stuffed animals and donate them to the pediatric wing at her local hospital in Oakland, CA. Her goal was to give every child a little bit of comfort and maybe a smile. My grandmother didn’t have a lot of worldly possessions, but she gave selflessly.
I suspect you can see why Project Night Night reminds me of her. I can’t sew to save my life but I can shop like the best. I’ve made a personal commitment to donate Project Night Night bags each month to my local shelter (PNN allows you to donate money for them to purchase supplies, but also allows you to donate directly to your local shelter). I run around buying throws, stuffed animals, and books – the local stores are used to me buying cart loads of stuffed toys :-) I put together the bags and, along with my Hubby, we deliver them. Of course our goal is to give to the children, but for me it’s also in honor of my grandmother – I can feel her smiling.
Our bags ready for delivery last month…..
I have them all stuffed and ready to go this Thursday on what promises to be another convertible mid-winter day – gotta love those!
